June 13, 2006
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.
BERKELEY, CA On Tuesday, June 20th, the Berkeley City Council will decide whether to include a measure advocating the impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney on the November 2006 ballot. This vote will be the culmination of months of work by Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, Councilmember Kriss Worthington, the Peace and Justice Commission, and Constitution Summer.
The proposed ballot language was crafted by the Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission using the Articles of Impeachment Against George W. Bush by the Center for Constitutional Rights as a guide, and with further guidance from Constitution Summer. The language itself is meant to be nonpartisan, moderate, and realistic. The allegations include the invasion of Iraq, illegal domestic spying, torture, and indefinite detention.
Members of Constitution Summer will be present at the meeting. President Geoffrey King will be available for comment immediately before and after the meeting. King most recently discussed Constitution Summer on CBS 5 Eyewitness News.
The Berkeley City Council meets at 2180 Milvia Street. City Council meetings start at 7:00pm.

Presently, the purpose of Constitution Summer is to present a moderated, legitimate, mainstream, nonpartisan case for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney based on four key crimes.
Those crimes are:
1) Illegal, warrantless domestic spying in violation of the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act and the Constitution;
2) The designation of United States citizens as "enemy combatants" who, by such designation, have been subject to indefinite detention without charge or trial;
3) The initiation of an illegal war of aggression based on fraudulent claims; and
4) The countenance of extraordinary rendition and torture.
It is the view of the members of Constitution Summer that each of these charges constitutes an impeachable offense, and that each has been substantiated to the extent that articles of impeachment can legitimately be brought.
Constitution Summer represents an emerging coalition of students and young people dedicated to defending the ideals of the Constitution and its Bill of Rights and to checking arbitrary abuses of power and authority, starting with the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney.
This coalition originated at Yale Law School, Stanford Law School, Columbia Law School, Georgetown Law School, Boalt Law School, George Washington University Law School, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, the University of Michigan, and the University of Maryland.
